Egon Stetmann maintained a research log aboard Hyperion during the Second Great War. The logs were primarily concerned with the protoss and zerg.
Protoss EntriesEdit
2133Edit
'Protoss 'crystal' sample recovered by Raynor's Raiders, 10.7.2504.I placed the crystal in saline solution for storage. Its density has increased 533% in the last twelve hours. Where does it get energy or raw materials for that? I have a terrible suspicion that it's.. connecting to the ship somehow. If Swann suspects, he'll drop it out the airlock, and that would be a tragedy. This sample could lead to huge breakthroughs for the Raiders.
I Just have to be careful, and if there's any sign that it will harm the Hyperion, I'll destroy the crystal myself.[1] '2142Edit
'The crystal is growing, and it appears to have something--some sort of.. anti-matter? Gravitational anomaly? Non-standard phenomenon?--hovering over it. I'm now convinced that the crystal is drawing power from the ship, but in ways so subtle as to be undetectable. It is non-organic but has a molecular structure as diverse and complex as any organism's. It's developed an intricate matrix that makes it tough and surprisingly flexible. An alloy based on this crystal would have impressive damage mitigation. The structure of this matrix also suggests some sort of energy-storage system. There might be something to this.
The protoss are so far beyond us. We must seem amoeboid to them.[1] '2204Edit
'The protoss crystal continues to grow. I no longer think it is drawing power from the ship. It's getting pure energy from that sphere above it, which presents a new worry. What's it doing with all of that power? Is it going to release it explosively? I have to keep Swann away from that sample; he will definitely shoot it out the airlock. With me strapped to it.I tried scraping smaller samples, but all my tools broke. Luckily, I found some cast-off chips floating in the tank. Wonder how they came off? In any case, the chips revealed more of the matrix. It's keeping the energy in a vortex. How does it move energy so fast? It may be the fabled protoss warp technology. For all its complexity, the matrix is as solid as the strongest structure. Hm, I wonder if I could apply these dynamics to our own structures? Make a note.
I'm learning so much from this crystal, but I can't help feeling as if it's learning from me, if that makes sense. Late. Tired. Sleep now.[1] '2299Edit
'I've been staring at that anomalous sphere above the crystal. It's obviously an energy emitter, but it has such strong containment that the crystal can slowly draw power from it via some method I don't understand. That gives me an idea: using our own containment technology, I could modify our SCV manufacturing process to double capacity with no increased risk. I think.Breakthrough! The energy in this crystal is not kept in a vortex pattern. It was warping the energy around so fast that I couldn't detect it. In an odd coincidence, the warping slowed just enough for my sensors to pick it up. Not sure how or why. Everytime I reach my wits' end with this sample, something happens by.. chance.. and I get a breakthrough.
Is it helping me? Clearly I've been working too many hours. I'm going to go lose some more credits on Lost Viking.[1] '2318Edit
'Okay, I may be exceeding the boundaries of good science, but I am now sure this crystal has some sort of.. if not sentience, at least.. direction. I put a broken nano-fabricator in the tank last night, and today it's fixed. And it can accomplish things it shouldn't. If I can reverse engineer this fabricator, I could do amazing things with automated repair, or even near-instant manufacturing of advanced AI weaponry. Possibilities are limitless. On the less upbeat end of things, the level of energy stored in the crystal's matrix has not increased at all, despite the fact that the crystal continues to grow. So it must be emitting that energy somehow, some.. where.[1] '
2977Edit
'All of the containment and reinforced structural integrity theorems I've developed from studying this crystal are starting to.. well.. crystallize. I think we might be able to contain energies that once required huge machines. Or even manufacture structures capable of hot landings from orbital origins with acceptable stresses.I'm a sham. I haven't truly learned anything from this crystal. I've just observed the smallest details from it and somehow wrangled a few tidbits when the crystal.. helped me. I don't understand how the protoss can possess technology of this magnitude and not rule the known universe. Perhaps they simply don't want to?
Last entry on this sample. I figured out where it is putting all that excess energy. It's feeding the Hyperion. Subtly helping to power the ship, balancing out some of the more ragged systems. It's giving of itself, and has been since it got here. Swann is excited that the ship is running so well, but he has no idea why. And I'm not going to tell him.[1] 'Zerg EntriesEdit
2103Edit
'Zerg sample recovered by Raynor's Raiders, 6.10.2504.Sample appeared dead when brought in, including tissue necrosis. However, tests now reveal frantic cellular activity, and it is moving.
This defies everything I understand about biology. I'm tracking massive generational changes in each cell. In the last hour, this thing has evolved more than humans did in 100,000 years.
If I can harness this, it could lead to huge military innovations for the Raiders.[2]'2139Edit
'The recovered zerg sample is still growing. I introduced a protein solution. Might have been a mistake. At cellular level, the sample shown strains of every known zerg creatures - and many other strains that I do not recognize. It will take a while to map it all, but I've already begun extracting data from an ultralisk cell, and I found a spore crawler cell that may yield data on its instinctive threat-recognition routines.[2]'
2247Edit
'Recovered zerg sample continues to evolve. Clearly has motor function despite the lack of anything like a neural cortex. It's giving off more heat than it could possibly be absorbing in that tank.I'm learning how some zerg burrow as well. It's extremely sophisticated. They have billions of tiny muscles that vibrate at a low frequency, effectively loosening soil, crumbling rock, and snapping vegetation. They can 'swim' through the ground. It's not quite as fast as running, but it's close.
I can see a way to put this knowledge to good use.[2]'2297Edit
'The zerg sample has developed an ocular organ. Will limbs be next? There is a basic dichotomy to zerg cell reproduction. Type A cells throw off seemingly random mutations. Type B cells hunt down these mutations and destroy them. It's survival of the fittest on the cellular level. Successful mutations thrive.I used microscopic scrapings from the sample to test an electrical discharge field I'd been tinkering with for some time. The results were gratifying. As an interesting side effect, the zerg matter developed into a very dense but flexible material. This material could be used to reinforce the superstructure of those old Hercules-class cargo ships that Swann's always trying to find a use for.
I wish there were time to both pursue the discharge field and iterate on the hardened matter. I doubt there will be.[2]'2354Edit
'The zerg sample has developed a large neural cortex. I've noticed it reacting to external stimuli, but in a very disturbing way. When it detects my presence, it stops moving. Is it trying to 'play dead'? Can it react at that level?I noticed earlier that zerg alpha amino acids have unique R groups. I've run a full regimen on some. Bluestacks just a sec game. Results are stunning. Zerg aminos are able to combine dead cell matter with normal proteins to biosynthesize new cells. They don't suffer generational cell degradation. Simply put, a zerg will never die of old age. They can constantly renew themselves, albeit with radically changing cell structure.
We could never harness this for biological use with terrans: the results would be foregone and horrifying. But I wonder if I could alloy zerg tissue with some of our metals to make buildings that heal? The renewal process also throws off immense energy as a byproduct. Something there. I should see about harnessing that energy.[2]'2384Edit
'The sample is trying to escape. I've detected several new acids in the nutrient solution. Over time, they will crack the tank. I wonder if Commander Raynor can post some marines down here? No; he'll want to destroy it. I haven't learned everything I can from this yet.Breakthrough. I dosed some tissue with concentrated sigma radiation, and it slowed growth and movement severely. It would take a lot of work to safely deploy that much radiation on the battlefield, but it might be worth it.
Another breakthrough, and this one scares me. I mapped my way through the DNA of some brain tissue, peering back thousands of years, and I isolated the strain from which the zerg Overmind was derived. Not enough to clone the Overmind, but I could follow this strand to gain insight into how it controlled the zerg.[2]'Cut LinesEdit
The following section contains information from a previous version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty which is no longer valid. |
Cut lines found in Galaxy Map Editor indicate that Stettman had voiced lines that pertained to his research. They are listed before, grouped by subject:
ProtossEdit
- The protoss excel at energy manipulation. As I understand it, arcthium gems are key to their technology. If we secure some of those I'm sure we can make a breakthrough.
- Ha! I was right about those arcthium gems! Even using tiny slivers of them to boost our reactors' output increases energy regeneration by twenty five percent!
- The memories in that ihan crystal are ideal for learning about the Dark Templars' battle strategies. Once you've studied it, we'll be able correlate the lessons learned and apply them to our troops!
- Huh. Ahh, well the Dark Templar have developed some highly unusual tactics. We can't mimic their kind of fluid combat style exactly but the improved coordination we've learned will net us an increase in firepower for all of our units.
- Ah those protoss relics are amazing. I've figured out a way to generate resonant kinetic fields that'll reinforce our vehicles' armor. Huh? Yeah![3]
ZergEdit
- Those hunter-killer hydralisks were just fascinating! I've developed a new pathogen that can be delivered via high velocity gauss rounds. This will make our marines' ammunition particularly effective against biological targets!
- We're really close to understanding zerg biology on a whole new level! I know it'll be tricky, but some samples from zerg queens would give me the last few genetic components I need.
- Well well well, ladies and gentlemen I've cracked it! The queens' dissection provided some real insight into the zerg's biology. On a practical level, I've advised Swann about fine tuning of our siege tank ammunition to cause maximum damage!
- Well I have completed the research on exo-dermal plating, thank you very much. I've suggested some adjustments to Swann that'll make our flame weapons much more effective against zerg flesh!
- Zerg evolve very rapidly, but if I could just examine some of their chrysalises, I know I can find a weakness.
- I've heard reports of hyper-rare mutant strains within the zerg gene pool. Studying some of those would be highly informative.[3]

StarCraft 2 cheats are great for blasting through the game's singleplayer campaigns, whether you're taking on Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, or Legacy of the Void. A word of warning before you start breaking the game: all of the following cheats will disable achievements for that campaign. To get those achievements you'll have to start a new campaign or load an earlier pre-cheat save.
These cheats don't work in multiplayer. Applying unofficial cheats or cracks to multiplayer is a big no-no, obviously, and might get you banned from Battle.net.
To use these cheats, simply press enter during a singleplayer campaign to open the speech box, and type the following. You should see the effect of the cheat happen immediately, and the chat log will say CHEAT in all-caps. Enjoy!

Easter eggs
Blizzard loves to hid secrets and references in its campaigns. Here are a few of the funniest
Unlock the Wings of Liberty secret mission
During the Media Blitz mission guide your Odin mech to the bottom right of the map and destroy the science facility at the end of the road. Pick up the documents that come out of the wreckage and look out for the secret mission Piercing the Shroud on the mission select screen. You have to complete it before heading to Char.
Wings Of Liberty Best Upgrades For Brutal
Meet Diablo
In Wings of Liberty, during the fiery Devil's Playground mission head to the bottom right of the map to find Diablo. You can't kill him or interact with him in any way, but there he is.
In Heart of the Swarm in the Roach Evolution mission after you've evolved and are heading towards the next set of enemies, keep an eye on the containment chambers on the top wall of the facility. Diablo's chilling out in one of those too.
Find Ewoks in Legacy of the Void
In the mission Unsealing the Past, set on Endion, you can find Ewoks all over the place, huddling around camp fires and hiding behind trees.
There's also a Jurassic World reference in this level. There's an 'enhanced strain' blue Zerg monster called Indomilisk Rex, a pastiche of Indominus Rex from the film.
Find the Tauren Marine
In the mission Zero Hour clear out the Zerg infestation in the top left of the map. Move beyond it and you will find a level 80 Tauren marine in power armour. Treasure your brief time with him, because your appearance causes him to run into a nearby toilet and never come out.
In Legacy of the Void, in the Templar's Charge mission, move your base platform up, up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right. The Tauren Marine lands with a nuclear explosion and you can control him as a unit.
Blizzard has been quiet about StarCraft's future, but you never know, we might hear something at Blizzcon 2018.

Alright, I wanted to do the campaign on brutal after playing it half a year ago. However right now i am stuck at the last mission with kerrigan and it doesnt seem to work without the right upgrades. 2 questions:
- Can I change my research/return to the hyperion?
- Does it delete all the information about me doing ALL except the last mission on brutal if i start a new campaign? I already did everything on brutal, would I have to redo all missions if i began a new campaign then?

I've passed campaign once and want to do on the Brutal now.
After passing all 3 first missions I did the 'Smash and Grab' - the 1st artifact missions. Upon completion I've discovered that I don't have laboratory available.. Then I did 'The Evacuation' - the 1st colonist mission.
I've passed the missions twice: - 1st time on Brutal level. Here I've collected all 3 Zerg artifacts and used one 're-load'; - 2nd time on Hard level to get 'Sacrifice Nothing' achievement (Complete 'The Evacuation' mission on Hard difficulty without losing or salvaging a structure). Actually I've completed 'Handled with Care' achievement too (Complete 'The Evacuation' mission on Normal difficulty without losing a Transport Truck). And also I've collected all 3 Zerg artefacts on 2nd pass.
When I've visited the laboratory I've discovered that I have 4 Protoss research points and 6 (!) Zerg points..
Question: What is a source of additional 3 Zerg points? As far as I know, till the end of all researches done no new research points are available when missions are completed.
Am I correct? Or each mission pass gives you all available missions research points?
P.S. Here is a similar question (I missed some research points in some levels, can I replay to get those points?), but it's answer is not clear for me.

If you're going back and RE-playing the missions, it'll take the research from the mission where you got the most research. So even if you did the normal mission and got 4 points, and then did the brutal mission and got 0 points, 4 points will be available in the next mission.
It won't double up though. I'm pretty sure about this: I did the whole campaign on hard, then went back and replayed every mission on brutal, and I know I didn't get extra research.

You are talking about a mission that is an option mission. You have the option of either saving the colony or purging it, whichever direction you choose first will be the only available research points you can earn, regardless of going back and replaying both mission possibilities. If you chose the zerg research, you cant go back and replay to earn the protoss research. You either have to load a save of the campaign before you made the decision or start a new campaign. Note, loading a previous game will lose any progress in the campaign, after the save point, however, achievements earned after the save point will still show as earned on your profile, but may not appear in your campaign. When all else fails, make detailed saves often, and check your profile when searching for achievements left to earn.
Note: during the media blitz level, destroying a civilian building in the bottom right corner unlocks the zeratul missions, allowing for 6 more research points, 3z 3p. Once you destroy the building, grab the files, finish the level, go the the laboratory and you will see a crystal in the bottom left.
Note: once you start the final missions on char, you cannot unlock the zeratul missions, load a previous save before going to char and start from there, you will have to replay some stuff.

Although it doesn't seem to be indicated on Liquipedia, I believe one of the Mar Sara missions gives you the extra three zerg points you are confused about.

Starcraft is back and it's as better as it was ten years. The overall world of real time strategy might have morphed, taking on a more tactical and role playing shift in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 and a previously lost grandeur in Supreme Commander 2. But Starcraft 2 is not a game that innovation lovers will love. This is as classic as it gets, with twists limited to new units and some interesting gameplay modifiers like lava and night and day cycles. Those who played the original will be right at home. New comers will be impressed by the production values and by the attention to detail. Hard core Blizzard fans will be pleased to play something from the company that is not MMO related. And strategy gamers will be content to return to the familiarity of Blizzard even though they might have expected something more daring after a ten year wait.
Story
There are two ways of looking at the story of Starcraft 2. A minority will ignore it wholesale, focusing on the multiplayer matches and on getting as good as possible on a tactical level. Another minority will only actually play the new real time strategy title in order to get to the cutscenes and to the character development, in order to see how Jim Raynor deals with his demons and whether the Queen of Blades, formerly the red haired Terran Ghost Sarah Kerrigan, still has any humanity left deep inside her soul. The first game managed to create some strong characters even if it painted with a very broad brush and a lot of people still care and want answers. Most gamers will take the story as it is, marveling at the way Blizzard managed to get various interesting elements from a variety of sources and welt them together in a coherent universe.
Propaganda machines
As the game starts Jim Raynor is still fighting the Terran Dominion when an old friend show up and the Zerg start coming out of their holes and assault settlements. The main forces of the Terrans pull back to the core worlds as, like in the first game, only militia and rebels are left to fight the rapidly evolving aliens. Zeratul makes a quick appearance and sets up a plot which, in predictable manner, will only be fully explained once Heart of the Swarm, the game built around the Zerg, and the Protoss narrative are launched, presumably in about two years. The feeling one gets is that something is missing, even if the single player is as long as it was in the original and the universe and supporting cast are better developed.
Gameplay
In some ways the gameplay of Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty is as old school as possible. There are resources, two of them as in the original, that need to be gathered with the classic MCV units. There are buildings that need to be erected in order to get production capabilities, support military population and research upgrades for the units. There are military units, each with advantages and clear witnesses, that need to be assembled into a coherent force in order to defeat Protoss and Zerg forces. There are support troops that can enhance the abilities of the strike forces. Superior, balanced firepower has a tendency of winning the day. There are few surprises here and anyone who played a strategy title in the last ten years probably has an good idea what to do with Starcraft 2 from the minute the game is launched.
Old friends with secrets
Blizzard throws in some twists but they are mostly on the periphery of the experience. The hub area of the Hyperion battlecruiser, looking much better than it did in the original game, contains four areas that have characters the player can talk to, objects that have a small backstory and two new ways to research upgrades for the forces the player controls. In the Armory area a Scottish sounding engineer who could just as well be named Scotty or be a dwarf allows the player to use money gained from missions to buy new abilities for both units and buildings, enabling a small amount of customization of a force that makes each campaign play through more unique to the player. In the Laboratory area research points obtained during missions for either the Protoss and the Zerg allow more powerful upgrades to be applied. It creates a rather weird situation where the way the Terrans developed is handled in three different areas of the game requiring changing quite a few screens to get everything done.
In addition to research and story related talk the various Hyperion areas allow the player to hire mercenaries, which are slightly upgraded forces that can be called down once a timer runs down, and to see his results in previous missions and even replay them. It's all pretty and engaging but it does not alter the experience of playing the real time strategy element of Starcraft II, where quite a few missions are pretty much remakes of missions from the original game with small twists thrown in.
The single player element is complement by a Challenges system, with Blizzard saying that it is designed to prepare those who are focused on the single player missions for the way other gamer play online. The good things about the system is that it allows players to experience all the three sides and that it teaches them to think fast, adapt their strategy and micro manage their forces in the heat of battle. It's unlikely that the Challenges will turn a single player focused gamer into a multiplayer fanatic but their inclusion, complete with achievements and replayability element, means that there's more to enjoy in the single player section of Starcraft 2 than he narrative.
Zerg = zombies
Graphics and audio
Starcraft 2 looks good but some players might be disappointed by how the perspectives work. The colors are impressive, bright and powerful even on the most desolate of planets. Even the Zerg units look like there are fun to create and use, despite their obvious evil nature. The game needs quite a bit of power to run everything on the highest settings but there's definite beauty in the Starcraft II.
Blizzard is also very careful with the handling of details. The Terrans might be a bit too macho for some but every unit portrait is beautifully created and animated, every movement is fluid and natural. The designs of the buildings are pretty similar to those in the original strategy title but there are flourishes and add ons that really feel like a coherent universe.
One problem is the size of the user interface. It's much too big for modern games, obscuring too much of the map, especially the areas to the center and the right that show the possible orders and the unit name and characteristics. The level of zoom is also a bit weird. I understand that Blizzard wants to keep the player close to action and so limits the level of outward zoom but I would have expected to be able to go lower, closer to the troops to see how Zerg and Protoss fall under the mighty weapons of the Terrans.
The audio is also beautiful, soaring when it needs to, depressing at times. I can hear influences from science fiction classics like Star Wars and from Western staples like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly but also sections that would feel right at home in Firefly. One disappointment is that the original voice actors are not back for Starcraft II, with the new Jim Raynor being especially annoying with his thick southern mannerisms. The background cast do a better job of conveying the essence of their characters but while Blizzard might be one of the undisputed masters of cinematic creations the company has some issues with the new adventure game like interactions that happen on the Hyperion, like allowing the same interaction to happen an infinite number of times.
Multiplayer
I haven't gotten around to playing too much multiplayer, with only a few Practice League matches under my belt at the moment. I've had a few wins and a couple of losses and I might feel confident enough in a few days to try the placement matches.
Battle.net seems to be doing a good job of actually taking players with roughly the same abilities and throwing them against each other. It's pretty certain that as gamers put more and more time into Starcraft II a certain elite will raise to the top, those with a lot of time and the ambition to be the best online but Blizzard has taken the necessary steps to make it as easy as possible for the rest of those of us who love a bit of competitive play to get online and have a decent game without getting the feeling that we are too old or too slow to actually be a challenging opponent.
The Good
- Classic RTS gameplay
- Superb production values
- Battle.net integration
The Bad
Conclusions
Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty does not make an impact on the scale of the original. It's extremely polished, it's beautiful both in the cutscenes and during the stages but the only innovation happens on the edges of the experience.I would have liked to see Blizzard be a bit ore ambitious and change the core mechanics a bit, maybe adding a cover mechanics or maybe making verticality more of an options when it comes to how battles can be approached. But as it is Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty is a very good solid product that all real time strategy fans should pick up. Download detective conan series.
